My Battlefield – Standing Up Through Christ
I’m Sloan Dwyer, and I’ve walked through a dark valley—one where addiction to alcohol and drugs once promised escape but only deepened my despair. Growing up as the youngest of three siblings, I experienced hardship early on. I remember times when hunger and loneliness were constant companions, and a world of pain felt inevitable.
At a young age, I was drawn into a path where small sips of alcohol turned into a dependency that stole my hope. I thought I was finding comfort, but in reality, I was losing myself. In that broken place, I felt alone, abandoned, and powerless.
But God was working behind the scenes. In my darkest moments, I encountered the truth of His grace. I learned that even the deepest wounds can be transformed by His love. My scars became a testimony—proof that when we hit rock bottom, God is ready to lift us up.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
– Psalm 34:18
The Journey of Healing
My journey toward healing was not a single, instantaneous moment—it was a gradual process that involved confronting my pain, seeking help, and most importantly, surrendering to God’s transformative love. Here’s what I learned along the way:
- Acknowledging the Pain:
The first step was admitting that I was in a battle I couldn’t win on my own. I had to face the truth about my addiction and the pain that drove me into its grip. This vulnerability was not a sign of weakness, but a necessary act of courage. - Surrendering to Christ:
In that moment of brokenness, I turned to Jesus. I asked Him to fill the void that alcohol had once occupied. I learned that true healing starts when we acknowledge that we need His help, and that our strength comes from surrendering to Him. It is in our weakness that His power is made perfect. - Embracing Counseling and Community:
Counselling became a divine tool in my healing journey. At Jesus JunXion, we see counselling not as a quick fix, but as a gift from God—a way for Him to use caring, wise counsellors to guide us. In the supportive environment of community and fellowship, I discovered accountability, encouragement, and a safe space to share my struggles. Through honest conversations, prayer, and shared experiences, I began to understand that I was not alone in my battle. - The Daily Process of Renewal:
Healing is a daily commitment. Each day, I sought to renew my mind and spirit through Scripture, prayer, and meditation on God’s promises. Verses like “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time” (1 Peter 5:6) became my daily reminder that restoration is a process—and every small step matters. In the quiet moments of prayer and reflection, I saw God at work, slowly mending the broken parts of my heart. - Transforming Scars into Testimonies:
Over time, I learned to view my scars not as marks of shame, but as evidence of survival and transformation. Every battle fought, every tear shed, and every moment of despair was repurposed by God to shape a testimony of hope. My journey taught me that our past struggles can become powerful tools in ministering to others who find themselves in the same darkness. - Empowering Others Through Shared Experience:
Today, I stand as a living example of what can happen when we let God lead the way. I share my story not to dwell on the pain, but to encourage other men who feel lost in the grip of addiction. Counselling, prayer, and genuine Christian fellowship are pathways to recovery. While they are gifts provided to help guide you, remember that the ultimate healing comes from a personal encounter with Christ.
A Message of Hope for Every Man

Your journey toward healing is a path of gradual transformation, and it begins with one step: reaching out. I encourage you to stand up, fight through the pain, and open your heart to the healing power of Jesus.
Counselling is one of God’s tools to support you on this journey—it offers guidance, accountability, and the assurance that someone is walking alongside you. But beyond counselling, true healing is found in embracing the love and redemption that Christ offers. Your story isn’t over; God is writing a new chapter in your life—a chapter of strength, redemption, and hope.
